Free garden visits across St Albans and the surrounding Hertfordshire towns - no fee, no obligation, no pressure applied.

Every project here starts the same way: an hour in your garden, walking and talking. We look at levels, light, soil and trees; you tell us how you want to live out there. By the end you will have a realistic sense of what the garden could be and what that costs - useful whether you commission us or not.

The studio is where the drawing happens, not a nursery or show garden open to callers - consultations take place in your garden, which is the only garden that matters to the design.

What Happens Next

From This Form To A Finished Garden

  1. A conversation first

    We ring you back, usually the same working day, for ten minutes on the garden, the ambition and the rough budget - enough to make the visit worth both our time.

  2. The garden visit

    An hour or so on site. We read the levels, light and soil, listen to how you want to use the space, and give you an honest view of scope and cost on the spot.

  3. Design, if you want it

    A written design proposal with the fee stated plainly. Commission it and the survey, concept masterplan and detailed drawings follow - with you steering at each stage.

  4. Build, when you are ready

    An itemised build price against the finished drawings, a programmed start date, and one team through to a planted, lit, handed-over garden.

Before You Get In Touch

What should I have ready before the first visit?
Nothing, genuinely - the visit is where the brief gets built. That said, two things speed it along if you have them: photographs of gardens you like the feel of (Pinterest boards and dog-eared magazines both welcome), and a rough sense of budget appetite. We can design to almost any number; what wastes everyone's time is designing to the wrong one.
Does the first visit cost anything?
No. We walk the garden with you, talk about what is and is not working, and give you a frank view of scope and likely budget on the spot. Fees only enter the picture if you commission a design, and they are quoted in writing before anything starts.
Can we see gardens you have designed?
We are a young studio and our project photography is still being gathered, so rather than pad this site with pretend portfolio shots we use design references and we offer something better: a conversation with a recent client, and where schedules allow, a visit to a completed garden. Ask when we speak - we would rather show you a real border than a stock photograph of someone else's.
Do you take on gardens outside the towns listed?
Sometimes. The nine towns on this site are the core patch, but interesting gardens have pulled us further across Hertfordshire and over the county lines it shares. The deciding factors are the project and the travel time, in that order - ask, and you will get a straight yes or no.
When is the best time of year to get in touch?
Earlier than you think. Gardens are seasonal but design is not - a project that starts its drawings in autumn or winter builds in spring and is planted into perfect conditions, then enjoyed all summer. Ring in May and the same garden likely completes for the following year. Neither is wrong; the winter start just gets you a summer sooner.
Will you quote against another designer's drawings?
Happily, if the drawings are good - a properly detailed design deserves a properly itemised build price, and we will flag anything on the plan we think will not work on your ground before we price it. If the drawings are thin, we will tell you that too, and what it would take to make them buildable.
